US stock indices posted the first weekly loss this year while the ICE US dollar index ended higher last week as markets re-priced in light of possible faster tightening of US monetary policy. The SP 500 fell 3.9% and the ICE dollar index inched up 0.1% for the week.

The SP 500 closed lower every session last week except Wednesday. It lost 0.7% Monday as personal spending growth declined to 0.4% on month in December from upwardly revised 0.8% the previous month. SP 500 added 0.1% Wednesday as the Federal Reserve left monetary policy unchanged. The broad market slumped 2.2% Friday as total vehicle sales fell in January and the growth of factory orders excluding transportation slowed to 0.7% in December from 1.1% in November.

The ICE dollar index retreated in every session except Monday and Friday last week. It gained 0.3% Monday as core personal consumption expenditure index rose 0.2% on month in December from 0.1% the previous month. The dollar index rose 0.6% Friday as the 200 thousand increase in nonfarm payrolls following the 148 thousand gain in December was higher than expected, accompanied by 2.9% increase in average hourly earnings year-over-year in January from 2.7% in December. Better than expected data raised the likelihood that the Federal Reserve may need to end up boosting interest rates by more than previously expected.

Monetary policy decisions in Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Russia, India, Brazil, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Peru, and the Philippines will be in focus this week. The Reserve Bank of Australia interest rate decision is due Tuesday, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will meet Wednesday, and the Bank of England will releases its decision on Thursday: no changes in interest rates are expected.
